All About Me

I am a retired police chief from Carbondale, Illinois. I began my  law enforcement career in 1983 as a patrol officer for the Freeburg, Illinois Police Department, I transitioned to the Alton, Illinois Police Department in 1987. During my tenure at the Alton Police Department, I was fortunate to hold a variety of positions and gained valuable experience as a field training officer, detective, traffic officer, SWAT team member, Sniper team leader, and undercover narcotics officer for the Alton Police Department, State of Illinois Drug Task Force and the DEA Task Force. I was also the SWAT team commander for the Alton Police Department and commanded a Regional WMD Special Response Team through the Illinois Law Enforcement Alarm System (ILEAS).

Promoted through the ranks, I retired from the Alton Police Department at the rank of Deputy Chief in 2009, after accepting the position of Police Chief for the City of Carbondale, Illinois Police Department. I left the Carbondale Police Department in 2014, after 31 years in law enforcement, to pursue other ventures. I have extensive tactical training and experience and have held several positions on regulatory, training, and policy boards within the State of Illinois. My latest board appointment was by the Governor of the State of Illinois to the Taser and Use of Force Advisory Committee.

In addition to being an In-Service Trainer for over 2o years, I have over fifteen years of experience as an Adjunct Professor for Missouri Baptist University, developing curriculum and teaching criminal justice courses, and have been an adjunct faculty member for Lewis & Clark Community College, John A. Logan College, Southern Illinois University and the Department of Homeland Security.

As a Instructional Designer, I have the distinction of creating the world's first Board Certified Cryptocurrency Forensic Investigator Course. I also hold instructor status for numerous disciplines including firearms instruction, use of force instruction, NIMS, Weapons of Mass Destruction General Instruction, H&K MP5 Sub-machine gun Instructor, and numerous other law enforcement related areas of instruction. I also hold certifications in Digital Voice Stress Analysis, Investigative Discourse Analysis, Certified Firefighter II, and Medicolegal Death Investigation.  I have instructed thousands of officers across the nation.

I am a native Illinoisan currently living with my wife Erin in Atlanta, GA. I have a full head of hair, occasionally enjoy a good Old Fashioned, and know my way around a nice box of red wine. I graduated college with a GPA sitting in the meaty part of the bell curve, not lagging behind, but not trying to show off either. I am an avid outdoorsman and enjoy traveling, camping, shooting sports, and riding my Harley. Golf is my game now. I'm long off the tee but can’t putt worth a damn.
